Should a backyard shed be painted the same colour as the main house?

Totally your choice! If it looks good to you, go for it! How about a few shades lighter or darker than the house color, still with white trim to keep consistent? Or a pale green or a nice lavender color?

it all depends on the look you're going for. I would prefer it to match. If your looking to add some color or contrast, paint a door/shutters a bright color and/or add some details with decor like wind chimes or plants or something else based on your theme.

I would go with a colonial blue. Its not bright, but muted a bit, and maybe like the shade of faded denim? It will complement the yellow and white and yet stand apart. Maybe the same blue for a window box on the house? Good luck!

That is a matter of your preference. Another thought is that you could paint the shed in a contrasting or complimenting color or you could even use it to try out ideas for paint on you big house, but it would just give you an idea of how it would look in smaller scale. If you want to tie the whole property together, it might be beast to paint it the same color, or very similar color. You could also reverse the trim/house combination on your shed so that the body of the shed is the same color as your house trim and the trim on the shed is the same color as the trim on your house.

I would absolutely paint it to match the house . Just my opinion .

I'll add one more vote for painting it the same as the house! In the town where I live, there are 6 or 8 houses with sheds painted to match. Especially if it is kind of "storybook" looking, it makes the two buildings look like a "property" rather than a house + shed. Add some shutters and a windowbox, and it looks great. You could put a clever small sign above the door to indicate it's use, such as She Shed, Pout House, etc.!

If it were mine, Wendy, I would definitely paint the shed the same as my house because (a) consistency and (b) one building isn't then taking attention away from the other. When a house has an attached garage, decorators always advise NOT painting the garage door the same as the front door. Why? Because the front door should always be the main focus; the welcoming factor when visitors come. The garage then should be painted to blend in with the brick or siding. The same theory applies to a shed - even though a storybook look sounds lovely! You can always add pretty decor by having urns or pots on either side of the shed door similar to ones situated at your front door and have fun with color choices. I agree with Ficher Luce and am picturing a Wedgwood (Colonial) Blue used say, in flower choices and cushions on any chairs you may have outside. If the shed has a window, put up a pretty blue and white gingham curtain then make a few cushions with the same material. Hang a pretty blue and white wreath on both doors - the shed and the house. You are only limited by your imagination! Have fun!

If you have a patio on the back side of your house try to carry some of the colors you use for the shed to the patio in the form of patio furniture and accessories. Such as cushions, curtains, planters, patio umbrella and the furniture itself.
