sand blasting
I do not like using chemicals so I would suggest using a heat gun to separate and remove the layers of paint. If you think it won't harm the finish, you could use a wire brush ($1 at Dollar Tree store) to assist in the removal. Good luck!
It is iron, you wont hurt it. Scrub away . . .
