Bare Dirt Yard Ideas Needed!

We recently had 7 large trees removed from our side yard, because they were leaning over our house and fence...and preventing anything from growing. It left us with a bare dirt yard that is a real eyesore. We are trying to decide a fairly cheap way to fix this side yard up so we can enjoy it. We will most likely have the stumps ground down in the next couple of weeks...but then, what?!? We have a firepit...(We can move it around if necessary)...but not much else. The other part of our yard is grass, so we are thinking it would be nice to make this a spot that we could use and enjoy more....maybe a low, floating deck? Any ideas? HELP!
Our pitiful, bare side yard.....

  • What a fantastic blank slate to start with! First I would decide how you want to use. Set a budget. Make a wish list. Then browse through similar projects here on Hometalk and Pinterest. When you decide, they start laying out your plans and purchasing supplies. To save a few dollars, I would do a few random sections with plants and mulch or some sort of tumbled gravel. Think about furniture placement and grill or whatever else you wish. Add accessories and art.

How thrilling! So many things you could do with the space. How about a pea gravel path to the fire pit, or you could plant wildflower seed except for the area that you would like to be the path, but then again, if a spark flew off you might have another challenge and lots of danger. You could clear the area around the fire pit and put down small river rock or sand and then initially put grass seed on the outside of that area, keeping in mind that this might be a temporary arrangement until you could afford to do more, like landscape the area. Once, one of the parents at my daughter's preschool owned a nursery/greenhouse and her husband was nice enough to give me some ideas on how to temporarily landscape an area in my old back yard, until I could afford to hire a landscape architect. Have fun!

Thanks! I love the idea of the pathway to the firepit...and also surrounding it with gravel/sand. That would definitely dress it up!

grow your own food if it is in full sun. decks are a lot of work and not inexpensive. how about an ornamental tree for some shade, dogwood maybe. Good luck. I am in the same situation

I like the garden idea. We were talking about possibly putting in some long raised beds along the fence and growing veggies there. It gets lots of sun, and would still leave the center area for other things...possibly an entertaining space since we are short on that type of space in the yard....Good luck with your space as well!

I just saw another idea that incorporates the use of dollar store glass 'buttons' as edging for a pathway. Might be pretty.

With a blank canvas there are endless possibilities. For garden ideas browse through Fine gardening website,Proven winner.com for annuals,Wayside gardens for perennials. You did not specify your location or lighting. First get an idea if you want to section the area off.Use a hose or spray paint to mark off what you want as a sitting area and gardens. One step at a time.

Thanks for the ideas. I love the idea of sectioning the area off beforehand....it would make it easier to visualize the final results...
