What kind of weeds are these?

I have a large area under a weeping willow that grows out of control with these weeds. We've lived in this house for 2 Springs now and last Spring we mowed it down, and burned it in piles. Before Summer ended it was as bad as when we'd moved in. This Spring we want to try a new approach. Grass would be great but we need to get rid of these darn weeds!
top photo looks like young Burdock. Is it soft and fuzzy?
The bottom photo looks like Plantain. Some people use it in salads. If you have bunnies, they love it!
I had something very similar in my (southern Ontario) garden and it was frustrating. I was always pulling it out; it grew back as fast as I removed it. The weed had a slightly rounder leaf than yours - the leaf almost looked like that of a wild violet - but it wasn't violets. We had numerous bunnies in the subdivision, unfortunately, they never ate it.
Yes, it is. And that's what I was leaning towards it being. Darn, that stuff is tough to get rid of.
Burdock is actually a food plant in Japan, it has very deep roots that are harvested. The deep roots are what make it so hard to get rid of. Since digging up those roots is the only real way to get rid of it, Here are some recipes for you.

Plantain is very hard and is a serious food plant with many health benefits.

The bottom pic is Comfrey. I grow it in my herb garden. The Burdock and Comfrey are two of the most valued herbs in any herbalists pharmacopeia.
And DO NOT use the comfrey in any plantain recipe. To much is as harmful as just a little is healing. It will irritate the mucus lining of the mouth and esophagus. Comfrey is used for healing skin and bone injuries in the form of poultices and salves.

We had a lawn infested with the bottom weed-it got so bad looking, we finally bit the bullet, applied a granular weed n feed mixture (think we used Scott's) which left us with very little lawn, once the weeds were killed. Then applied grass seed and regrew our lawn.
