I have a wooden counter top on my kitchen island. It is a pale oak. I would like to make it a dark maple or walnut color with a shine. How would I do this.
Thank you

Sand it with a medium grain sand paper . Choose your stain and apply according to the directions . Let dry completely . Apply several coats of polyurethane , letting each coat dry completely before applying the next .

Easy as pie! decide 'how dark' you want it...take into consideration the stain that it already has. Once you chose the stain, test it on an inconspicuous area wait a day or so & see if you like it. Once you get what you want, stain it, let the stain penetrate & apply a glossy sealer you want.

if the wood has sealer, you will need to remove the finishmand sand down, pick, the stain color you like. I recommend gel stain because it's easy to apply and forgivin. Apply a coat and decide if the color,is how you want i. If not, lightly sand, wipe down and apply second coat. When satisfied then apply polyurethane, lightly sanding in between until satisfied.

    3 things:

    1. Apply a wood conditioner after it's been sanded down, it really helps the stain soak in more evenly without streaks.

    2. Definitely practice on a scrap piece that is the same wood as the piece you will be finishing.

    3. Make sure your sealer is food grade if you'll be preparing food directly on the surface- polyurethanes are toxic.

    Gool Luck!
