HOw do you determine where to pinch back flowers (like geraniums)>

  • I deadhead the geraniums when they have bloomed out just as I do roses. Geraniums, once established are pretty hardy, you really can't go wrong. Just make sure your clippers are clean and sharp.

    When mine get leggy I trim off about a third of the length and put the trimmings into moist sand filled pots to root new plants. Also deadbeat blooms as they fade so the plants can't grow seed which signals them to stop blooming. I do the same with petunias and they bloom until Fall.

    Take the entire stem of the faded flower off.

    pinch them at the base of the stem where it comes out of the main plant. I just do it with my fingers when I'm out in my yard. Just bend and pinch and break. They aren't fussy.

    The above replies are all correct ... just cut off the stem PLUS the faded bloom at the spot where the stem branches off the main stem. Sometimes they snap off readily but I'd suggest scissors if you are new to gardening.
