How can I make hanging Flowers look great all season?

I love hanging lots of baskets of flowers of different varieties so I spend a good amount of money on them each year in April. Besides plenty of water and fertilizer regularly. In Nashville the summers get BRUTAL by the middle of July. Any other things I can do to keep them looking great all season??
Thanks!
