How can I decrease my weeding, cutting, spring & fall cleanups?

12 years ago, I bought this ugly bungalow and completely rehabbed it. Never having so much land (1/2 acre), I bit off more than I can (now chew), and need to cut down on the work. I don't think I can afford a professional landscaper. Meanwhile, I totally revamped a large perennial garden, adding grass back from where I had originally removed it, mulch (costly every year), and two of us never stop till about mid-October. We're in RI, so spring - when it finally comes - is beautiful, but the work is too much! We just got back from a 2 week Caribbean holiday and returned to 8 inches of chickweed where we never had any - including on top of the beard iris rhizomes!

Just having grass to mow is your best bet flowers gardens are work you have to love it to keep them up I have three big beds I order mulch fom Lowe's when it goes on sale for 2.00 a bag making it affordable and my work weeding less I also spray weed killer and it works great newspaper and cardboard boxes work great for underlay before mulching the reward of flower gardens come in spring summer and fall with all the colors you receive from your labor
Thanks. My area is so big, I have to have mulch delivered; getting it by the bad would be a fortune. You're right about flowers - I love them and I even separate them and try to sell some during summer. Maybe I will go back to using boxes underneath.
I don't think you need a professional landscaper. You need a mow and blow service that also does clean up. You tell them what you want done, they supply the manpower. I would also supervise to make sure they do not uproot you prized plants. Call around and get free estimates. In CA they are a dime a dozen, in RI there must be something similar. Certainly worth a few phone calls.
To cut back on mulching you can purchase rubber mulch and never have to mulch again. It comes in colors that are guaranteed to last 12 years without losing it's color.
I had never heard of it. Initial research shows expensive, but I'm going to look more. I have a lot of land, but have to measure it, to figure the cost. And I want to see it in the flesh. I had just had my first load of mulch today.
