Clematis like hot heads and cool feet. In other words, plant in the sun but mulch the base so it stays cool & a bit shady. Feed & water!
It also may depend on where you live, they say you can grow them here in Florida (live in Palm Bay) but haven't seen any in yards. Grew them like crazy in Virginia & Maryland!
    Hope this helps. Sue

I live in North Texas area and my rule of thumb is to have their feet in the shade and their faces in the sun. I grow them next to my house on a trellis and each one gets some sort of shade from the afternoon sun

What is your location and where did you have them planted?

These can definitely be a noxious weed that will kill your trees if it gets onto them. Somewhere you can keep it trimmed and it doesn't escape.

I took seeds from one plant, and threw them out into a flower bed, and now I have too many plants.
