Training. I use a can with 21 pennies. I shake it at the dog when they start to bark. they soon learn not to do it. you can also try training with food reward when they don't bark.

  • Train train train! Many pet stores have low cost lessons. Positive reinforcement works best. They are loving animals that just want to please you.

  • First, ask why the dog is barking! It might be signaling that an intruder is around the property. It could be a breed that cannot stand being alone (beagles). You can train a dog not to bark at strangers by distracting and then rewarding it. You will need someone to play the intruder role and to repeat this over and over again. But working breeds and nervous dogs will be difficult to train NOT TO BARK. For my house, a barking dog is a great thing because no one will break into your house. You will know when family members come home (a different, friendly bark and happy tail waging along with the bark.) It is wise to do research about a dog breed's behavior BEFORE you get a dog so that you get a pet who is right for your family. When a dog barks it is communicating with you, and that is a good thing. We had a neighbor who always teased our do and then would complain that the dog barked at her! We put up a privacy fence and stopped having her over....

Thank you (everyone) for your advice. I am trying to help my friend who has a high-strung Australian terrier (I think he called it) with separation anxiety. His neighbors (anonymous) have left a threatening letter regarding the barking, so I am going to share your advice with my friend and see if we can get the pooch some help!

  • Check with your local town regarding noise levels that are acceptable; most of the time you are required to be quieter at night but certain levels of noise during the day are acceptable. Some people do not like dogs and complain about small things. Do not get into anything nasty but explain that the dog was bought inorder to keep your home safe and that the bark warns criminals to stay away. Do research about the dog breed to find out what can help calm the dog. Personally, I have more problems with neighbor's children than the pets in my area (kids destroy my landscaping, are loud at night.) The complaining neighbor would be far worse off if a rock band practiced at the house! Try to keep calm; remember that people have the right to keep a pet provided it is cared for and not a danger to others. It is very kind of you to want to help your friend with this problem! Dogs are family members and dog-haters do not get that.

I am a dog trainer and the first thing I teach MY dogs..is to SPEAK !! Yup...if you give the action a word, then you can train them not to do it. Otherwise....a dog has no clue what he is doing wrong. It also helps when I WANT a dog to bark at something, and a simple NO Speak turns him off.

Worse comes to worse? For your friends dog that is causing a nuisance with neighbors, you will have to be more aggressive. There is a Citronella Collar that works well on dogs . If it's a matter of getting rod of the dog or using this collar? I would use the collar. But training goes along with it meanwhile. Keep in mind...terriers are barkers !!!
