    Apply food grade diatomaceous earth.

The earth idea is the best. If you want to try something from your kitchen before investing it that, they hate Cinnamon, Cayenne powder, and talk.

What I use to get rid of ants, anywhere, is an equal mixture of baking soda and 10 X (powdered sugar). Put it in something flat so that the ants can get at it and take it back to their nest. Ants can't pass gas, and this will kill them. But, if you have ants near your peonies, leave them alone. You need ants there to help the buds open. Sometimes ants are needed. The baking soda/10X is non toxic to anything that can pass gas, so your dog, cat, bird, kid, anything, can eat it without harm.

Bay leave is good deterrant to ants.
