As long as it gets regular water, lettuce can thrive in trays as shallow as 4” (10 cm), and pots of any kind, so it’s a great plant for container vegetable gardening
I just pour seed in a row and step on it and I have had it germinate. I don't cover with a lot of dirt.

My granny used to tell us when we were kids to plant lettuce in a row that was as deep as your thumb.
I just grow various lettuces and spinach in clay pots - just keep well watered. I just use kitchen scissors to trim off what I want for my salad and it just keeps growing.
