What's the best soil for planting a lilac bare root plant?

I had a lilac bare root planted last year, killed it trying to weed wack from around it, any ideas how to keep my next lilac from over grown grasses and weeds.

Dig a circle around the tree and put newspapers and heavy landscape fabric. Once you plant the tree make a small border around it with a row of landscape stone edging.
