Its practically impossible to get rid of the squeaking noises floors make. I really wanted the builder to make my house squeak proof. When I told him, he laughed at me. Only thing I can say is that the house settles and things creak and squeak. I like to think it's the house talking to me.

We've moved recently to a 7 year old house & have the same problem. My husband is in construction & says it's because they nail the floors down when they should be screwed & they don't put in enough. In our 1st house, he screwed the floors down & we never had any squeaky issues.

I had the same problem in a hall above a finished basement. This is an old carpentry trick. Use your foot to find the squeaks. Mark them with pieces of tape. Drill 1/8" holes into the wood at an angle facing each other about 1/2" apart. Use 8 Penny (8d) finish nails and nail them into the holes. Countersink the nails and fill the holes with a Minwax wax pencil same color as the floor. The nails at an angle will pull and hold the floorboard from moving.

Some people have use talcum powder (baby powder) and sprinkled where the floor squeaks are forcing the powder in between the floor boards. This does work but is only a temporary fix as the the powder dissipates and the squeaks come back.

It isn't the nails but the wood flooring and sub floor. Wood expands and contracts with weather changes. Eventually this causes the nails to loosen from the wood and the squeaks are from the flooring/sub floor rubbing against the nails. Screws are a fair idea if you can hide the screw heads or have the time to cover hundreds of screw heads.

If you have a way of getting to the underside of the floor you can use screws to hold the floor boards down drive the screw threw the joists into the floor and if you floors are sagging put a house jack in the middle of the joist and raise the joist so it is lever and then you can screw and glue strips of chip board or [glue and screw another joist to the existing one] on the joist leave the jack in place for at least 24 hours and then go to the next one and you wll loose the mouse sound

on the chip board way is cheaper and probably stronger than another joist just saw the chip board in 8 foot strips just slightly narrower than the joist

I would start on one end with 8 ft then go to the other side and start another strip about 1 ft back o f the one on the other side as you are over lapping them

back and forth to you reach the over side: ------ --------- --------

    -------- ---------

    hope this makes cents/sense
