a nice sturdy trellis - old wooden a frame ladder would work you would have to tie the vine up-old panty hose will do it. you can also direct the vine along the side of a row. uncle Lester would put sweet sand/ sharp sand under his melons and pumpkins, other squash to keep them off the dirt and to allow water to drain away from the fruit.
just a hint...pumpkins and corn are companion plants....you can grow them between the rows...pumpkin keeps the corn roots moist because it gives shade to the roots and the stalks protect the pumpkins leaves from the scorching sun...win win
Why? If you want a pristine "neat and tidy" garden, vining plants are not a great choice. Yes you can trellis them, but you may lose some fruit in the process.
