Annuals at the base of palms can add any color pop you choose to decorate with and can be changed easily as your pool and patio decor changes. There are so many types of palms to choose from too. Sagos practically take care of themselves and only need low maintenance in the spring time when the get new fronds and pop up little baby shoots at the base. If you remove those babies carefully you will have an endless supply of sago palms in just a few summers. There are some that grow well in shady areas too that are more frilly and soft looking.
Rubber mulch contains carcinogenic substances and doesn't let water penetrate the soil. I don't even touch the stuff.
As far as palms go, if you love roaches, you'll love palms.
That aside, I get so tired of people posting questions like this. No one can provide you with a landscape design without seeing your property, the orientation, soil type, and consulting with you on your level of experience and commitment to maintaining the material in the plan.
