Why won't my hydrangea plants grow?

When I was a little boy we visited my grandmothers home and she had BIG headed hydrangea flowers and I loved them. The plants were more like bushes and she would cut the flower stems for the dinner table and to give to friends.

We live a little NE of Atlanta and we keep planting them - in the right sunlight, the right soil conditioner, the right watering and the right prayer and the they refuse to live, nevermind thrive. We've spent hundreds trying to get this right.

Please HELP the little boy in me!

Are you cutting them back in the fall... you need to find out if your hydranges flower on old wood or new wood. This is usually the problem, don't ever cut them back and you should enjoy flowers. To give them a boost in the spring use 1/2 cup epson salt to 1 gallon water, also hydrangea 's must be watered often. Good green thumbs to you!!

From my experience hydrangeas need a lot of water. Mine are planted in an area where they get a lot of shade and only about two hours of sun. I water them every other day for five minutes. They are thriving. We don't get frost often, but the plants have been harmed by the frost. When this happens, I cut them way back and have never had a problem with them returning to full bloom.
