You can start your own herbs by rooting fresh herbs you buy in the produce section. If you're planting for kitchen use, think of what you use a lot. Thyme is easy to grow and has many varieties. I particularly like lemon thyme, which is a colorful yellow & green, with teeny leaves and a creeping growth that looks pretty draping over the edges of a pot. You can also plant more than one herb in a pot for a pretty dish garden. Think tall/upright in the middle, like African blue basil, rosemary, or lemon verbena, surrounded by lower growth herbs like thyme, oregano, tarragon, with trailing/creeping herbs on the edges, like chamomile or mother of thyme.
