Once the leak has been fixed, wash any moldy area down with a sponge dipped in a 1:4 solution of bleach:water. Let it dry completely, then paint with a good mildew proof/resistant paint, like Valspar reserve or Behr premium plus ultra

The surface mold is just a sign that the drywall is compromised. Mold grows from inside out. Washing the surface won't solve the problem. You need to check the insulation in the attic, you may need to replace the insulation and the drywall. If you try washing it off and it comes back the drywall is compromised.

I would have a professional come look at the area and if necessary remove it if it is black mold. Black mold grows quickly and can very detrimental to your health.

if the mold reappears you may have to replace the drywall and insulation. Zinsser makes a good product to block stains from coming thru new paint.

  • I would cut out the affected dry wall and look behind it. Any insulation that is moldy should be removed and the area treated with bleach or vinegar.

I recommend you use “Roof Protect/Cleaner” as it is the best cleaner that I have experienced as it emulsifies impurities, provides an improved refined surface by effectively removing oil, grease, mildew, dirt, and other soils from the roofing membrane. It will also inhibit mold growth.

Personally, I would strip out all the moldy pieces and replace with new because the mould will keep coming back if you don't. That said, you can buy Mold remover at DIY's and large Stores.

I would cut out the area of ceiling that has mold and also check the wood studs in the attic for mold. Spray the wood with bleach and let air dry well and ensure there's no mold remaining. Repair the cut out area with new dry wall, tape, texture, and then paint to match the ceiling.
