The best glue depends entirely on what you are using it for and where. Standard wood glue is not for use in wet locations, such as outdoors. There are water resistant wood glues such as Titebond 2, as well as waterproof wood glues such as Titebond 3.
Polyurethane glues such as Gorilla Glue are very water resistant and can be used on a range of materials, such as brick, stone, concrete, and wood - basically anything that is porous. It works moderately well on metal if the metal is roughed up to give it something to grip to. It cures by exposure to moisture, so you may have to dampen one part with water before gluing, and it can be a bit messy and it will turn your skin black if it comes in contact with it. Plus it expands as it cures -- how much depends on the amount of moisture it is in contact with.
Epoxy can be used for anything wood or polyurethane glue can be used on and has much better adhesion to glass and metal. But epoxy has its own limitations in that you have to mix 2 parts together in the correct ratios and can also be a little messy and sticky.
