What can I do about Snakes!?

I live in an area where I've never had any problems with snakes. Due to some serious construction in the surrounding community, I now have snakes slithering into my back yard. I also have dogs, so I have to be cautious of what I can utilize. I already deal with wolf spiders, foxes and possums- I am clueless about snakes!

If you can have them "free-range" poultry. They love to eat ticks and fleas AND they also keep snakes away, too.
Most snakes are non-venomous and helpful to your environment - they eat a lot of bugs, spiders, mice, rats - depending on their type and size. Most of them don't want to encounter you but they can be scary when you're surprised by one. In tall grassy or lush areas, I just use a rake handle to brush around before sticking my hands in and they'll pretty much just leave. Check out the many online sites to see what snakes are common for your area and exactly what you're dealing with. In my area I do have mostly venomous snakes like rattlers, cottonmouths and copperheads but when encountered, I've never had one become aggressive - they just scurry away. There's no surefire solution (mothballs, red pepper, etc) but your dogs will probably alert you and possums and raccoons as well as chickens are pretty good for helping to decimate their population too. Thank you for your information....I know I shouldn't be so alarmed- it's a new challenge for me. My first encounter a few weeks ago was sitting on my lower deck enjoying the sunny afternoon, when my puppy began yapping at something. Less than a foot away was from my foot was a 2 foot garden snake also enjoying the sunny afternoon!
