Painting rough sawn wooden crates for outoor use.

We are converting the crates into shelters for our ducks and want to protect the from the elements and preserve it. Should we undercoat with shellac first. etc.? We know to use only paint appropriate for outdoors. It is untreated and new.

think about using an opaque deck stain, which will soak into the wood, not just coat it.

Shellac is a great undercoat and used by many woodworkers to seal the wood and any imperfections, especially knots in softwood. Prevents bleed through. Zinsser B-I-N is a shellac base primer, so you could use that since you will be painting the crates.

Thanks. We also thought to begin with shellac to seal it because it will probably absorb a lot of topcoat without it.
