  • Most likely it did not grow through the plastic, but on top of it. They are shallow rooted and easy to pull or pluck out. There is no such thing as totally weed free - unless you have a full time garden staff! ☺ Which most of do not have the luxury of such services. So I pluck weeds every day . . . Along with lots of other people . . .

Most of the time, the black plastic (the ones you use under mulch) has still tiny holes so weeds grow thru it. You need at least 10 cm of mulch to prevent that, or, you could put normal black plastic bin sacs under it, or a thick layer of newspaper, anything that blocks the light entirely.

    Good luck

Try pushing the mulch aside and add newspaper or cardboard to help with the weeds.

It takes a year or so to do this but well worth the wait. Put down newspapers and put dirt on top of them. The newspapers prevent alot of weeds from coming thru but it is a time issue.

Use preen for prevention every so many months. You may still have to pull weeds now and again. Thanks to dirt and dust there will almost always be weeds. I use preen before I put down fresh mulch and right after. I still get weeds. I have a ridiculous amount of weeds. A couple of years ago I pulled up 3 layers of weed proof fabric. All layers had weeds growing on top of and through! So I gave up on the fabric. I put down a 4 inch layer thickness of mulchwith the Preen. And guess what? Weeds were growing into the mulch. Maybe try rubber mulch? Good luck!
