You don't say what zone you live in and whether you want annuals or perennials. Astilbe (perennial) comes in many different colours and heights and will tolerate/prefer low light and looks great amongst host as and ferns. Begonias will al so provide beautiful colour but depending where you live you might have to lift the bulbs before winter.

Tuberous begonias are gorgeous (annuals). Hostas are great anchors, do have blooms eventually in the season and will survive winter. There are many varieties of both. Look through the perennials at the garden store for light requirements. There are a few.
