Hi there! We had a nightmare like this in our apartment, but we're good one - it really is possible to deal with. First of all, make sure you are locating and fixing the water source. Is it a leak? Is there space between the window frame and the wall that needs to be covered? It doesn't make sense to clean and dry out a wall until you have located and fixed the problem. Once you do that, it really depends on the extent of the moisture. For us, we were able to open the windows (we live in a dry climate - this only works in a dry climate!) for a day, and the next day, use several heaters in the same room to dry it out. In some cases, you may have to open the wall itself.
the house I have purchased has been vacant and closed for about three years. I showed the wall to the mason working on my kitchen tiles and he said something similar to what you have said. The damp would go away once windows are open

Yes, Cori! It's essential to locate the source of the dampness. Is this an outside wall? We had to seal, from the outside and inside, a stone wall we had to stop it from leaking.
Once you find the source it should dry up quickly in this weather and stay dry.
I actually like a fan for drying out leaks and flooded areas, You don't say where the wall is or next too. Used to be an apartment manager, and used a box fan or two to dry out accidents and floods all the time.
Well a couple potential sources could be 1) the window sill is rotting/seperating away allowing water to penetrate the wall, caulk and/or replace sill. 2) The deck is the source of water, is it level, maybe one of the posts is failing and needs to be replaced. 3) I would look at the gutter above this area, it could be coming loose allowing water to drain down wall, or it could have a hole, or just need cleaning and check the downspout, is it full?
You need to find the source of the water, cause water can cause lots of damage and allow mold to take hold. If you can't resolve it, get a good handyman.
