Why do my potatoes have a type of scab on them?

well it depends on what kind of potatoes. Could be they are older and starting to seed or they could have had frost burns on them or could even be a disease.
Very alkaline soil can make 'scabs' on potatoes you grow. Oak leaves used for compost or mulch will do this.
Potatoes DO NOT LIKE fertilizers...you can grow potatoes inside a tire with newspapers! The scabs are due to too much fertilizer in their growing medium; add sand, leaves, shredded newspaper or paper of any type that you have shredded up...just keep it moist & continue to bury the potato plants as they grow...leaving 'a little' green showing.
