How do you change very very hard dirt?

I want to plant a few seeds to grow tomatoes and squash but the ground is so hard it would take an army of soldiers to dig into the dirt! Plus putting in a stabilizer to hold up the plants doesn't stand a chance! Flowers would be nice, too but no chance of this either! Any suggestions?

I summise that you have clay soil? If so, wait until it has rained and then dig out the holes you want to plant into. Throw the old dirt in the trash and replace the planting holes with a mix of garden soil, composted manure and some vermiculite. I have to do this here in VA and I have lovely gardens.
Plant them in large containers.
dig up where you want to plant and mix in some sand with the clay. It will help it drain better.
Make a raised bed, and fill with growing soil.
Next spring in the rainy season, rototill the soil working in compost and peat moss. You can rent rototillers at your local tool rental center.
I like Janet's idea. and you can place then in the ground too, and replace the plants inside easily.
