Do you know your planting hardiness zone? Clematis will grown in Zones 4-9. So unless you are extremely north, you should be able to grow a Clematis.

Where do you live? I have one and live in the mid west.

I live in lady lake near Orlando, Florida, an hour from Disney World. It's possible the sun is too hot in the day during the summer.

I'm from West Virginia and they do fine and are hardy enough to make it through winters.

As Sherry Case recommended, you should check your planting zone first. But even if your zone is not recommended for planting a clematis in the ground, you could still plant one in a large pot (with a trellis or bamboo poles for support for the vine) during the warmer weather, then bring it indoors for the cold winter temperatures and trim it back so that it will come back fuller the next spring/summer. If bringing indoors for the winter, it will only need watering about once every couple of weeks or so as the plant goes dormant for the season.

Thank you. It sounds like a lot of work bringing it in and out. I live in Lady Lake Florida about one hour from Disney World. I think it may be the heat of the summer sun that may be more of a problem.

As long as you plant it where it can get shade part of the day the Clematis should do well in your area.
