DIY Rug Made From Old Clothing!

I've been holding onto a bunch clothing that I no longer wear and decided it was about time to do something with it! This is a simple way to transform your old shirts and other clothing into your very own braided rug! I have to say, the project took a lot longer than I expected. It takes a while to cut, braid, and mainly - piece it all together at the end. But with some patience, it'll turn out great! So here's how I did it. Enjoy! Collect any old shirts, pants, sweaters, etc. you have lying around and either start thinking up a color scheme or just go with whatever you have!
You'll need a good pair of scissors that cuts through material. You'll also need some thread and a needle.
Cut the clothing into long strips of material.
Take three pieces of material at a time and start braiding!You can mix up the colors and make different combinations. Sew a simple stitch at the end of the braid to hold it in place.
The last step is to piece all of the braids together. For this, you can either sew them together or use a strong fabric glue. I alternated between the two and even experimented with hot glue (which probably won't hold the rug together so well, so I'd say sewing is the safest option!)

I love rag rugs. Instead of braiding, I'm weaving one on a lap loom. Great job!

People have been making 'rag rugs' forever -- even today you can get hand made braided wool rugs ... too labor intensive for me .. but I do make things out of old tee shirts! A large curved upholstery needed would make sewing them together much easier that using a straight needle
