How to avoid weeds permanently on a low budget income?

Agree with the too expensive, but if you like the idea of pavers, try just getting a few each month and spread the expense over a long period of time. That is what we are going to do in our back yard. We are not using fancy pavers, just twelve inch squares. They are 99 cents at our home depot. It may take us time to get it all done, but it will be much better than the mud pit our dogs turned our house level area into. Tried planting grass but it didn't last long with them around. We also have four very large trees in our yard, two in front and two in back, plus large trees in neighbors yard that create too much shade in front and back for decent grass to grow except on the top of the third tier which isn't as shaded(we live on a steep hill, so the yard is tiered three times and also live on a steep hill going down the road in front of the house.

Sounds like you have a great area for it to naturalize with what ever wants to grow. Some areas you can keep under control by mowing at the highest setting for the blade, other areas you can use a 'weed whacker' /string trimmer with a blade. Thru the years it will give you added privacy, be a great sound buffer against road noise, and in the summer can lower your ambient temperature as much as 10%!

If you're wanting to kill the weeds permanently and not replant anything else in their place plain old vinegar from the grocery store will get the job done. It's cheap and it won't hurt your dogs. You won't be able to plant anything else there for a while because vinegar kills everything, it doesn't care if it's a flower or a weed.
