Is it a good idea to just sand and refinish old dressers?

I was wondering if painting over old dressers it a better idea and new hardware.

It all depends on the "Look" you want. If you are a traditionalist then painting a nice piece of wood furniture will drive you batty. If you are more concerned with keeping with current trends then painting is the way to go. Either way there will be some prep work required to get a good look.
The picture below is a piece we rescued from the curb on Trash Day. It had been spray painted with black paint. I stripped and sanded most of the black paint off. The top is actually painted with Rustoleum "Espresso" color paint, but the brush strokes give it the look of wood grain. The body is painted with white chalk paint and distressed with brown.

I would paint it if I have the time. 1, save money 2. chose the color go with your current decor 3, sense of achievement 4, besides new paint and new hardware, you maybe able to change the shape depending on the structure. such as adding new legs

If it is a quality made piece it definitely is worth refinishing...if you don't want to work too hard at it, Annie Sloan chalk paint is so easy...very little prep work.
