Electrical Question- last night power went out in part of the house...

Last night power went out in PART of the house. Reset the breakers and GFI reset - nothing happened.

I had the entire house rewired and brought up to current code a number of years back. On a slab, so no critters under the house. I inspect for entry points where animals could creep in on a regular basis.

I have never had this happen?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If any of your neighbors have the same problem it probably is the power company transformer. If its just you,, could be one leg of the power coming into your home has no power. Also there could be a loose wire or short in a junction circuit feeding part of the house. You can call the power company and have them check it out or the electrician that did the rewiring. Some You tube videos that may give you some insight. Good luck!

    • Thank you so much! I just had an electrician here - bad breaker. I do not have all the tools otherwise I might have been able to fix myself. It took a bit of time, but I did find a decent honest local guy, and not even expensive. Will be calling him again if I have a problem. So glad to have all the electric back!

One of your breakers went out and needs to be replaced.

You may have squirrels, mice or rats in the attic chewing on wires. Electricity is a huge fire risk, call the electrician asap. If a wire has been chewed through you could be in immediate danger.

Is the power that's not working on more than one circuit?

    • Half the house was out and the GFCI was fine but the breaker was bad. I do not have the tools to fix myself. Just found a great local guy that is honest! Yay! Will be calling him back if I need help in the future! Thank you so much for responding!

This happened to us, and the problem was at the utility's electrical connection to our house. I would start with them--they'll come out to check right away.

If your breaker is up to date,, next time you can do it yourself. No special tool required. You can get the breakers at home depot. Pop the old one out and bring it with you. They will give you the correct one. All you have to do is pop it in.

    • Thanks so much! I have another one in my opinion might be "iffy" and will certainly give it a try. My HD is more self service, not that many seasoned pros in there, they have a bunch of high school and college kids in there more concerned with Instagram and social media than what aisle breakers are located. I know the store better than they do. Plus rather poorly run in my opinion. My Lowes is a bit better and my fav local hardware store couldn't compete and closed down years ago. But I will figure it out with the help of all of you generous people who take time out of your lives to help others. Thanks again! So nice to have whole house electricity instead of just half. ☺

you can also do a search on YouTube for step by step instructions on how to replace a breaker. Very helpful.

    • Thanks! I tried that first, but do not own (yet), some of the items needed to perform this task on my own, hence, I had to call in an electician. Took me almost 3 weeks but I found an honest one that is local. ☺
