The best things you can do is to cut off their food source and make them feel less comfortable and welcome in your yard, http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Keep-Snakes-Away-From-Your-House/

Keep grass mowed short so they can't hide. I have never seen one but there is snake proof fencing. Google it.

Old fashion saying is spread moth balls under the house or around the foundation, but I am not sure that it works. Keeping area clear as possible and having cats will help.

We have lived in our house over 20 and never saw a snake but a neighbor said he saw one behind our storage building when he was mowing recently. Our property is clean and we'll-mowed. We don't even get mice because my husband has sealed all openings and gaps well. We get timber rattlers and copperheads in our region so I don't want them! One neighbor moved away. She had four dogs in her fenced yard that was between us and a creek. I think the dogs must have been keeping the snake population in check.
