How can I save Geraniums over winter to re-bloom the next year?

In Germany homeowners have many window boxes with geraniums. They never discard those in winter and re-plant them over and over again. My Grandmother did that, but she is not longer with us, and I don't remember.

Simply take them out of the flower boxes and replant in fresh soil and a container large enough,place in a sunny location,water when dry to the touch,if need be during the winter months pinch them back.
Before hard frost my grandmother would carefully pull up geraniums and shake dirt off roots and put in brown grocery bag and put in cellar. I do this and cut off some of the growth and put in closet in basement in brown bag. Replant in spring and water a lot.
I lose a few but most do very well.
I bring in my geraniums in the winter in their pots, put them in a sunny area--they do bloom.
I have also put the geraniums in a brown paper bag in a dark, cool area.=--dust off the roots as suggested in a previous response. In the late spring, plant them.

Thank you, Louise. I believe that I can remember about the paperbags. I just purchased many Geraniums for my window boxes, and like to save them for years to come.
