Go to the local carpet store and ask them if you can have one of their 4'-6' cardboard tubes. Then, cover it in sisal rope or carpeting you can easily replace when it becomes too worn. Do this just down to the top of the brackets so you and properly attach them.
When you do a base on the bottom with wood, you can get 4 L brackets, screwing them into the wood at each corner. aligning them perfectly.
It's very important that you have two be a bit longer than the other two. This allows you to use 1 long bolt and nut for the top and one for the bottom, so they don't "run into each other". Affix some feather toys and catnip mice to the top and you have the best and cheapest way to entertain your cat. Hope that helps.

How about using plastic crates? you can easily stagger stack them pyramid style. just make sure the cats paws won't get stuck, put little pillows or carpet piece and toys inside the crates, you can hook them together with Twine or twist ties... also put the openings different directions, you could make an easy cover for them by stretching a t-shirt over each one, would make good hiding spots. This would make good climbing or jumping spot for the Cat.. Go as high as you want.. I saw a cute cat bed made out of an old big Suit case. The lid was fixed Open so the cat could climb in and out..Pillow to sleep on and a blankie too.
