Is there any way to stop suckers from coming up around our tree without killing it, it is quite large and some kind of cherry tree

You are correct to be concerned. I am not aware of any preventive that would not harm the tree. I just cut off the suckers as close to the ground or trunk as possible.
You will have to just keep cutting them off.There is no way to stop it.
That is a part of the growth pattern and self propagation of that plant/tree. If you remove them the tree will use that energy to grow up and out.

Thanks everybody, I have the same problem, and have been cutting them off but wondered if there was a different solution. I'll keep cutting them off.
