While growing peppermint around your house is one possible method for using this popular herb to deterrents (and other pests), you can also mix up peppermint essential oil and water solution – about 10 drops in a small bottle of water – to spray windowsills and door frames or directly onto lines of marching ants. Tea tree oil also works. Keeps counters and stovetops clean. Both oils are kid and pet-friendly.

Use borax and place a line of it down underneath the window or the door from which they coming in your house. The ants will cross over the borax and within a very short period of time, will no longer have any ants. We had an exterminator (from the property management company of the apartment we had lived in)pull up the carpet from the tack strip, put a line of borax in front of the entire window on the floor, under the carpet. We never had ants again! Make sure animals and/or kids are not able to access the area where the borax is placed on the floor.

Use baby powder. Lightly sprinkle the path they are using. After 3 or 4 days they will be gone. My mother had ants for many years. Could not find where they were coming in. I read about the baby powder ( didn't think it would work) but I drove over to her house, sprinkled the powder on the back side of her counters. In a few days they were gone.
