You can just add to it, but after awhile couple years you need to remove excess and start fresh. Our landscaper told us this.

We usually just add more over the top of the old. Better coverage.

  • Leave the old mulch removing sticks and weeds. The old mulch as it breaks down will enrich the soil. Be careful not to add too much new mulch. About 2-3 inches in total of all the mulch is adequate to hold in moisture and help prevent weeds while not making it too wet.

I hope this helps, and good luck!

Top the old mulch off with fresh, you do not need to remove it.

We usually just add more. At first you may notice color differences, but in a short time the new will weather and match as long as you use the same color.

Just add to it but depending where you live, you might want to fluff it up a bit before adding more. In Florida we have to watch for mold in Red Mulch because it can kill your Palm trees

As everyone has said, put it on top. I've been doing it at this house for 12 years and never had to remove the old.

Ditto...just get the same color and if not, the sun will make it look like the same color :)

You don't have to, but do make sure you don't get too deep of a layer of mulch. You also want to "stir and fluff" the old mulch before putting the new mulch on top.
