How do you keep deer and rabbits out of the vegetable garden?

I live in the city limits and there are oodles of rules regarding what you can and cannot do on your property. One of these things is no fences. I am thinking about container gardening up on the deck. Any ideas out there?

I have 4 raised planter boxes and just had to build a temporary barrier because some critter pulled out my cantaloupe plants and half my tomato plants! I used PVC pipe and deer netting. Since this set up might not pass your rules, how about containers like wine barrels with poles that you can drape deer netting over? Have the touching at the top like a teepee. I love getting fresh ingredients from my yard when I'm cooking so I know how frustrating it is to have the wildlife help themselves!

I also would go with raised planter boxes but would prepare the ground with chicken wire and maybe you will also put the wire around and on top is necessary

Will the deer stay off your deck? Check with those in the know to see if perhaps fencing around something like a garden would be ok as long as it does not cover the whole perimeter of the yard and only the garden. Perhaps wire fencing around your garden would not be excluded because it would be seasonal.

I used to live in the country and had an outside dog that seemed to keep the deer away from my plants. If you don't have a dog but know someone that does, you could ask for their fur when they get brushed and place the hair around the plants. or see this site : https://www.hunker.com/12331222/flowers-that-deer-hate

Would chicken wire around specific areas of the garden count as a fence?
