You can use chalkpaint, that way you wont have to prime and sand, less room for damage!
It sounds like a beautiful piece of furniture Donna. I love the look of Chalk Paint. However, if you haven't used it before then I would suggest you try it on a smaller project first. I go to thrift stores and buy small projects to try out new techniques.
