I used a countertop primer, then faux painted my own version of a cracked rock. Put on three coats of poly and I love it!

I was going to same something similar as CeCe. The only thing I would add, is I did a light sandpaper on existing counter to
roughen the surface for the primer to grab a little better. The faux painting technique is fabulous and you pick out the color combinations. I used a 'sea sponge' and be careful not to get too much on the sponge at a time, as it will look 'blobbed'. You can always add more, but a bugger to correct. Actually, as I recall, I had paper bag or paper towels that I dabbed the sponge on to remove excess before applying to counter. You will want to use at least 3 colors of different intensity. Start with the darkest. Best to go to Home Depot or Lowes and look at the counter tops. Make sure you notice all the colors in the one you like. There is usually a hint of something you might not have noticed at first. You will see at least 3 colors in each one. Good luck.
