The floor around my fireplace hearth seems to have sunk!

There is now a "lip" around where the base for the hearth is, under the vinyl flooring., and the vinyl is cracked. If we put down new vinyl how do we fix this lip so the same thing doesn't happen again? The height differential is about 1/3 inch so it is quite significant. I thought hard surface flooring might help, but then there would be a gap under there just waiting to let the flooring to break.

Would you be able to fill the gap by laying down a plank of wood approximately 1/3 inch, so that you can evenly lay the new vinyl on top?

But then what happens at the end of the board? Just have a 1.3 inch bump out in the floor.

You're going to have to pull up the old flooring and find out why it sunk in the first place . Your subfloor may need repairs . Better to address something like that now than later.

Been there and done that. Nothing wrong with the sub floor. The house was partially jacked up to repair foundation, so we know, sort of, WHY it happened, just dont know how to fix it without having to build up the entire floor, which is about 600 sq ft. But thanks.
