Well you can come up with some innovative and inexpensive ways to cover it. Think Pallets, tin tiles, gluing up news print or old posters and sealing it, etc.
You can even make faux tin plates our of styrofoam. Hope those help.

I have been in restaurants in which they just painted the ceiling...joists, stringers and all...most of the ceilings were high and black but maybe you could spray paint yours whatever color you want. My sister-in law stapled newspapers on hers...several layers...and worked great for her lower ceiling basement.
Paint it black to disappear or white to add interest like in a loft.

A friend painted his basement ceiling all black and then added string lights. It looked awesome especially at night with the lights on.
