My home faces the west, so has hot sun in afternoon. What can I plant?

I have great luck with phlox, lavender, mums, and bee balm... columbine also grows nice...

Okra! Really, even if that side has partial shade, you may want to plant sunflowers, desert/sere shrubs, grasses, cacti, asters, and maybe elephant ears to help add shade for other plants. You can change the environment somewhat if you paint all or part of that wall a darker color (or a sheet or two of plywood painted dark leaning against the wall) to keep some of the sunshine from reflecting back against the plants. Good suggestions! In my west-facing garden, I have germander and buddleia, as well as rosemary and thyme. (I know, I know! They just grow well there.) We also have sago palms and Texas sage. Oh, and honeysuckle and cross vine. Not sure how your part of Oklahoma's weather compares to central Texas but I have a feeling we're much alike. Good luck! (I'll be watching this thread. Could always use ideas.)

BTW, I'm in zone 9
