White vinegar is a 99% natural disinfectant. You can use it to clean your carpet in a steam cleaner or as a spray. It will smell like vinegar when you are cleaning but will dissipate and the vinegar smell will go away. Just make sure to test an area first.

You can mix baking soda with your favorite essential oil and sprinkle it over your carpets. Let if sit for a bit and vacuum it up.. You carpets will smell fresh. The baking soda gets rid of the odors and the essential oils give it a nice scent.

I steam clean with vinegar. The smell goes away when it dries. Make sure to dilute it.

I went to hardwood floors after cat odors ruined our carpets. You may not be able to switch. Go for baking soda now!
