Soil for onions needs to be well-drained, loose, and rich in nitrogen. You can till in aged manure or fertilizer the fall before planting to get your soil ready. Alternatively you can work some good compost into the soil. Organic matter will increase the health of your soil.

Are you having a issue growing \anything else? Is your soil clay?

you also need to know the best onion to grow in your area for example the onion that grows best in Florida is the Vidalia. If you cut the tops of the onion short while growing the bulb will get bigger. (There are other onions types for Florida but I prefer the Vidalia I grow it by seeds)

Try growing them in pots. I grow carrots in pots.
