I live in Tucson and have a yard like a botanic garden. Lots of things will grow in Arizona as long as you are willing to pay the water bill, and you amend the soil. I strongly suggest you reach out to the local master gardeners and perhaps take a class. there are a number of great books about growing in the desert, written by local horticulturist. And if you don't want a huge water bill, you can choose desert plants that are adapted to this environment. Not just cactus, many, many things to choose from that with a little additional water can create a lush environment. Check with local native plant nurseries, ask lots of questions and create a plan. Happy gardening.
