Break the first one with a hammer and then use a metal scraper like for drywall pasting and push under tiles to release them. That's what we did. It was pretty fast and easy.

None is right if the tiles were laid own in the last few years. If, however, they are from the 1900's to 1950's then the application was more complex. Those tile floors had an under layerment (like a base coat) of cement with a wire mesh as a crack preventer. Over this was another thinner layer of a cement like mortar, into which the tile were placed . Then the grout was added to finish off the floor tile.

If the hammer and scrapper doesn't get the job done as you expect. You may need to rent a power hammer (like a small, light weight, jack hammer ) Tell the rental yard folks what your doing and your experience level and they can advise you.

Its a messy job, but the end result will be worth it I'm sure.
