If you need help, get a really trusted friend or family member whose decorating style you admire to help you. Decorating does not come naturally to everyone so never feel bad, most people had to learn somehow. Just remember it is supposed to be fun and not stressful. If you love a piece, then it works and you will find a way to incorporate and that is your style.
Go to Houzz.com and look up the room you want to decorate like kitchens or foyers and see how they are done. This would all depend on a lot of things, are you using your present furniture or starting with a blank slate.
go to the paint/hardware store. Pick up a number of paint chips (2 of each colour) that you like. Place them on wall with sun and without with painters tape. Look at them over a few days and see which look better in natural and artificial light. You can also by trial pots of paint inexpensively and try painting a few areas, same ideas as the paint chips and see in natural and artificial light and see what you like best. if adding curtains etc, it is always easier to match paint to the accessories than the other way around.
Be careful of any "Inferior Desecrater ". Don't be a sheeple. There are some truly idiot ideas put over on people by magazines, web sites and your very own local "Inferior Desecrater ".
