the cover my husband built for our patio has the two by fours on end not lying flat, so I am trying to figure out the simplest way to water treat it and make it look better.

You can treat a pergola the same way you would treat any wood exposed to the elements. Use products that are used on wood decks. You can get stains that also provide weather protection like a water repellent wood preservative. or use the wood preservative and paint a color of your choice. I would hang wire baskets ($1.00 at Dollar Tree with basket lining!) filled with petunias! Also pretty windschimes! How lucky are you!!!!

Gel stain because it's thick and won't be a drippy mess. It wipes on with a rag. Then I would sesl it with no less than a few coats of polyurethane.

    Giod luck!

Yes both ideas a good...just make sure the poly you use is intended for outdoor use., if that's what you want. For myself, I use a stain and that's all because when poly eventually deteriorates in the sun it's messy to clean up again.
